  5. Alton Towers Trip
  6. The JCR are thinking of having a college trip to Alton Towers on FRIDAY 19th JUNE 2009. That is the Friday of May Week. The trip would depart Friday morning from College and arrive at Alton Towers mid-morning. The coaches will depart Alton Towers late afternoon to arrive back in Cambridge early evening. The coach journey will take approximately 2.5 hours.

The trip would cost around £37 each (based on 100 people going) and that price includes:

Ÿ Executive coach travel with DVD/monitors, reclining seats and WC
Ÿ Full entry into Alton Towers theme park

The JCR are willing to do the organisation for this as long as 100+ people are interested.

We feel it would be an amazing opportunity to celebrate the end of the year as a college, and a fantastic start to Grad Week for those graduating!!

If you would like to come, please email (and include your name and year-group) ASAP: CHLOEHOLE@GOOGLEMAIL.COM

  7. CUS Events
  8. Frederick Forsyth
In collaboration with the Cambridge University Conservative Association.

The leader of the German Free Democrats once said, "If the European Union applied for membership of the EU, it would be turned down. The reason? Not enough democracy." This was a comment that Frederick Forsyth picked up on. Perhaps best-known for his thrillers, such as the international bestseller "Day of the Jackal", which he published in 1971, Mr Forsyth has in recent years established himself as a political commentator, and as a "Eurosceptic" has written both books and articles on the short-comings of the EU. He is also a well established political commentator, having appeared as a panellist on Question Time and The One Show, and in print in the Daily Express. His talk, introduced by a member of the Tax Payers Alliance, will focus on this, the "quite deliberate abrogation of democracy". Venue: Kennedy Room Date: Mon 4th May, 2009 at 7:00pm

Pub Quiz Bring your mates for some trivia-based fun with our resident quiz master extraordinaire, William P. R. Dean - it's practically revision. £40 bar tab / Pizza Express vouchers for the winners each week. No entry fee. Venue: Bar Date: Mon 4th May, 2009 at 8:00pm

    Israeli-Palestinian Bereaved Families Forum
A DIFFERENT TAKE ON THE ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN CONFLICT
In collaboration with the Woolf Institute of Abrahamic Faiths.

[Open to all members of the University.]

It's difficult to believe that anything positive can come out of losing a family member in the violence between Israelis and Palestinians. Robi Damelin has lost her son. Ali Abu Awwad has lost his brother and spent 4 years in an Israeli prison. They direct their grief and personal tragedies to building bridges and promoting peace and humanity. Both are members of the Parents Circle-Families Forum, a grassroots organisation of 500 bereaved Palestinian and Israeli families. Together they promote reconciliation as an alternative to hatred and revenge. At the Union they will be speaking on this theme, as well as sharing their story with the audience.

We invite all members of the University to join us for an evening of tolerance and inclusiveness, in looking for new solutions and a new approach to the conflict. Venue: Chamber Date: Wed 6th May, 2009 at 7:30pm

This House Is Proud of Thatcher's Time as Prime Minister

THE RT HON. PETER LILLEY, M.P., former Minister for Trade THE RT HON. Except for the Israeli-Palestinian Forum, which is open to all members of the University, these events are members only, subject to our usual guest policy (see the Cambridge Union Society website for details).

Ethics

  1. UN Global Survey on Sustainable Lifestyles
  2. The UN Environment Program have asked CUSU to organise the participation of at least 100 Cambridge University students in this survey, aimed at exploring young adults' perceptions on sustainable lifestyles and obtain inputs to help in the design of policies which take cultural differences into consideration.

Fill in the online survey (and get more info) at www.unep.fr/gssl

IMPORTANT : the first question - "How did you first find out about this survey?" should be answered with "Cambridge University", to help identify our sample when extracting results.

A huge thank-you from the Ethical Affairs team!

  3. College Balls Sustainability Project
  4. Every year, Cambridge puts on 20+ College Balls, with anywhere from 500-5,000 people attending each ball. As a quick estimate, if every person attending has a drink an hour (and we all know that we tend to have more than a drink an hour, I mean, you're paying 80 pounds!) 500,000 bottles or cups are used in one year of May Balls, and that doesn't scratch the surface of the waste produced. Until recently, this was all sent to landfill.

The College Balls Sustainability Project (CBSP) was formed by students that believe that Cambridge students should be on the cutting edge of environmental responsibility, and that as the flagship of student run events, the May Balls should be an example of this. We run teams that work with the May Ball committees to recycle as much as possible, and deal responsibly with any remaining waste. We need more students to lead these teams, acting as environmental responsibility consultants for a May Ball. If you are planning to attend your college's ball as a guest, you can lead the team for a different ball. May Balls are famous events, so leadership and consulting experience with the balls looks great on your CV, especially if you want a job in sustainability efforts, consulting or management. You'll get to attend May Balls for free, and you'll help keep them affordable and sustainable.

This is the fourth year the CBSP have been operating and our experience makes it very easy to plan and run the events. If you're interested, please contact Stephanie Bush (sjb@ast.cam.ac.uk) by May 5.
