Ruth Padel
Ruth Padel's Darwin - A Life in Poems is a biography in poems of her
great-great-grandfather Charles Darwin. She began as a Greek scholar at
Oxford: her non-fiction includes two studies of ancient Greek ideas of the
mind and madness for Princeton University Press, a study of rock music and
Greek myth, an eco-travel book on wild tigers, and two popular books on
reading modern poetry. She has won the National Poetry Competition and
published seven collections: her first poetry reading was twenty-one years
ago with Ian Patterson in Cambridge, summer 1988, for her first pamphlet of
poems, Alibi, published by the Many Press. Throughout 2009 she has held a
Leverhulme Fellowship as Resident Poet at Christ's College, which enabled
her to finish her first novel, Where the Serpent Lives. It will be
published next February and dedicated to the College.
Ian Patterson
Ian Patterson has worked as a further education teacher, radical journalist,
translator, and second-hand bookseller. For the last ten years he has been a
Fellow of Queens' College where he is Director of Studies in English. Since
his first book in 1969, he has published some seven volumes of poetry,
including Time to Get Here: Selected Poems 1969-2002 (Salt, 2003) and most
recently The Glass Bell (Barque, 2009). His translation of the final volume
of Proust's A la recherche, Finding Time Again, is published by Penguin. His
Guernica and Total War was published in 2007. His star-sign is Virgo.

- Last Folio
Dear colleagues and friends,
I should like to invite you to the public opening of and an introductory talk about photo exhibition
LAST FOLIO: beauty of decay and preservation
on Wednesday 11 November at 11 am, Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge.
Shown for the first time in Britain, LAST FOLIO is a photo exhibition based on a recent discovery of a Jewish school in Slovakia that stood intact since the deportation of its pupils in 1943. The images of books found at the school have been taken by Slovak-Canadian photographer Yuri Dojc. A set of evocative portraits of decaying books that are no longer in a state of being saved and read, it is a story of destruction and neglect. Dojc treats each book as a survivor by capturing them as a portrait preserved in their final beauty. A number of images in the current exhibition have been acquired by the United States Library of Congress.
The event takes place at a pertinent time of commemorations of the victims of antisemitism, the world wars, moreover on the eve of the country’s first-ever Interfaith Week.
Attached please find further information about the exhibition and the opening event, and a poster. Do feel free to circulate this further and, circumstances permitting, kindly print and display the attached poster.
Should you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact me anytime.
Yours sincerely,
Lucia Faltin

The largest student conference on world poverty, human rights and the environment is coming up in Manchester. With a group booking, tickets will cost £19 for the whole weekend; accomodation will be £3 a night; and train tickets shouldn't be more than £30 with a young persons railcard if we book soon! We'll be leaving Cambridge early on Friday afternoon and coming back around 10pm on Sunday. UMS/leave a cheque in Beccy Talmy's pigeon hole, Queens' College, for £25, by Wednesday 11th November, to reserve your place. If you have any questions, email beccy.talmy@googlemail.com. - Mastana Auditions
Get involved in MASTANA - Cambridge's biggest and greatest Asian arts
show!!!
Every year, Mastana raises thousands of pounds for charity by bringing
together Asian talent for one magical night, in an exposition of world
music, a melting-pot of traditional dance against vibrant urban beats, a
stage for colourful comedy, and a flaming catwalk. This year, it will be
held on Saturday 6th March 2010 at the Cambridge Corn Exchange, one of
Cambridge's most prestigious venues, playing to an audience of over 1000
people. And we need YOU to make it happen!
Whether in dancing, music, modelling or acting, we're looking for acts from
all parts of the world, covering the entire spectrum, from traditional to
modern! We are looking for eastern and western performers (or anyone who
can mix the two!) as long as you can take the stage and captivate the
audience!
Remember that you don't have to be Asian, size zero, or the best dancer in
the university! Mastana is about meeting new people, showcasing Cambridge's
talent and raising money for charity. This year, we are proud to support
Cancer Research UK and The Manitha Neyam Trust.
AUDITIONS will be held on:
Sunday 1st November, 2-5pm, Mong Hall, Sidney Sussex College
Tuesday 3rd Nov - 5-8pm, Bateman Room, Caius College
Thursday 5th Nov - 6-8pm, Mong Hall, Sidney Sussex College
Sunday 8th Nov - 6-8pm, Mong Hall, Sidney Sussex College
Tuesday 10th Nov - 6-8pm, Mong Hall, Sidney Sussex College
Thursday 12th Nov - 5-8pm, Green Room, Caius College
Please send us an email at mastana-acts@cuhcs.org to book a time slot or
feel free to drop in anytime between these times!
Don't worry, it doesn't need to be your actual act, and it doesn't need to
be perfect - we just want to get an idea of what you can offer. If you have
any further questions, please email mastana-acts@cuhcs.org.uk, and we'll be
happy to answer them.

- Dissertation Research
I am in my third year studying music at Homerton, and for my dissertation I
am researching into the relationship between music and synaesthesia.
Synaesthesia is a condition where a perception in one sense automatically
evokes a perception in another, for example people might see colours and
shapes when they hear words or music. For my dissertation I am trying to
find as many people with synaesthesia as possible, so if you think you
might have the condition (or you know anyone with it), please contact me on
ser51@cam.ac.uk.
Thank you for your help,

- Take the Leap
Take the Leap aims to give school children skills that will help them inform their lives. The workshop works with community schools where few students attend higher education. This is not a big commitment, and will only take up a day or two of your time. It is a great way to give something to your local community whilst at Cambridge. Not only that, but being involved in a project like this will appeal to employers, particularly the training workshop we provide. This is an excellent experience to work with children, especially for those aiming to follow a career in teaching.
If you want to get involved, or for more information, contact Rav (rsa31@cam.ac.uk).

- Bone Marrow
SAVE A LIFE!: JOIN THE BONE MARROW REGISTER
Cambridge University Marrow Donor Recruitment Clinic
Saturday 14th November 2009, 1-5pm, Long Room, New Hall
Come to the clinic, run by Cambridge University
Marrow, to join the Anthony Nolan Trust's bone marrow register. A small
blood sample will be taken if you choose to join and meet the necessary
criteria. Everything takes no more than 15-20 minutes!
For more information, read below, or look at Cambridge University Marrow's
website: http://www.srcf.ucam.org/marrow
# WHY JOIN? #
Every year thousands of people with diseases, including leukaemia, reach a
stage in their illness when their only hope of survival is from a bone
marrow stem cell transplant. In some cases a sibling or relative may
provide the best match, but in many cases an unrelated donor could be the
only option. The ANT bone marrow register allows a database of potential
donors to be searched and matched for tissue type. Put simply, the more
people who join the register, the greater the chance that a good match can
be found when a patient is in need of bone marrow. So, THE MORE PEOPLE WHO
JOIN THE REGISTER, THE MORE LIVES COULD BE SAVED!
The chance of being called up are fairly slim, but if you are then you will
be saving someone's life.
# WHO CAN JOIN? #
Most people aged between 18 and 40 can join the register (subject to
certain criteria - see below). We are particularly looking for MEN and
people from ETHNIC MINORITY GROUPS as they
are significantly under represented on the register.
International students who are staying the UK for at least 3 years
are most welcome to join the register as well.
As tissue types vary with ethnicity and sex, it is particularly important for
members of these groups to sign up. When you attend the clinic you'll be
taken through the registration process by a trained counsellor, who can
answer any questions you may have. For detailed suitability criteria,
including medical conditions which may preclude registration, see the ANT
website (http://www.anthonynolan.com).
# FURTHER INFORMATION #
For information about the clinic please contact Ou Yanwen ( yo228@cam.ac.uk)
or Myura Nagendran (mn337@cam.ac.uk) For info on Cambridge University
Marrow or the Anthony Nolan Trust, look at their respective websites
(above).
Best Wishes,
