Christ's News

  1. Cambridge Proms
  2. Dear member of Christ's

I am delighted to be able to let you know that the University's 800th Anniversary will be celebrated through a special BBC Proms concert on 22 July at the Royal Albert Hall. The concert begins at 8.00pm and will celebrate Cambridge's rich history of music. Sixteen College choirs will be participating, including our College Chapel Choir, and the two soloists are Simon Keenlyside and Thomas Trotter, both graduates of Cambridge. The conductor, another alumnus, will be Sir Andrew Davis.

The programme includes music by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Ryan Wigglesworth, Charles Villiers Stanford, Jonathan Harvey, Judith Weir and Camille Saint-Saëns, all of whom have a strong connection with Cambridge.

The programme for the evening is as follows:
    • Ralph Vaughan Williams Overture - The Wasps
    • Ryan Wigglesworth World Première- The Genesis of Secrecy
    • Ralph Vaughan Williams Five Mystical Songs
    • Charles Villiers Stanford Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in A
    • Jonathan Harvey Come Holy Ghost
    • Judith Weir Ascending into Heaven
    • Camille Saint-Saens Symphony no. 3 (Organ)

For those unable to come to the concert, the BBC will broadcast the Cambridge Prom concert twice on Radio 3 (the first broadcast will be live) and make it available on BBC iPlayer for 7 days after each broadcast. The BBC will also offer it to radio broadcasters around the world.

As this is one in the series of Proms, booking is open to the general public, not just those with a Cambridge connection. However, it is hoped that many Cambridge alumni will wish to attend. Further information and details of how to purchase tickets is available at www.bbc.co.uk/proms/2009/howtobook/information.shtml , and advance booking is possible via the Royal Albert Hall's website at http://www.rahrequests.org/acatalog/BBC-PROM8.html

We are arranging a drinks reception before the concert for Christ's alumni and their guests who are attending the concert. If you secure tickets for the Prom, please let the Development Director, Catherine Twilley know on cmt23@cam.ac.uk so that we can send you an invitation. Please note, though, that numbers are strictly limited for the reception.

  5. The Hippolytans
  6. The Hippolytans is Christ's Women's Sporting Society, uniting and supporting the best sportswomen throughout college. It aims to promote and encourage female sport within college by only admitting women who play at least two sports at Cuppers level.

However this is not just a sporting society; this is a group of talented young sportswomen who also like to engage in a spot of dining and wining with Cambridge's finest male talent.

At the end of the Summer Term we will be offering the opportunity for new members to join. If you are interested in joining please email the President, Rachael Stubbins (rs525), by Friday 15th May with the sport(s) you play in and out of college, any positions you hold within those teams and a couple of sentences on what you think you would add to the Hippolytans. To qualify you need to play at least two cuppers sports or partake in a sport at university level. If you don't meet the requirements, please do still apply; each application will be individually assessed by the committee. We are aware that several college sports indicate more commitment than others and similarly participating in certain university teams carries more weight.

    Cambridge University Chamber Orchestra

    Varsity - "Quite simply breathtaking"

    Saturday, 9th May
    8:00
West Road Concert Hall, West Road, Cambridge

    O Appalachian Spring! I gained the ledge;
Steep, inaccessible smile that eastward bends
And northward reaches in that violet wedge
    Of Adirondacks!

    Copland - Appalachian Spring Suite
Jacob Ter Veldhuis- 'Tallahatchie' Concerto - UK PREMIÈRE
    Schreker - Chamber Symphony
    Saxophone- Rob Buckland
    Conductor - Peter Stark

Put the textbooks down, forget the practice papers and leave a space in the revision timetable for this very exciting evening’s music.
Copland’s ballet suite moves between jubilant rhythmic play and deeply moving passages of exquisite simple beauty. Following this is the jazz inflections of Jacob TV’s concerto in its UK première performance, and the post romantic sound of Schreker’s little known gem. Peter Stark, CUCO’s principal conductor, will be joined by world-class saxophonist Rob Buckland in a very special concert, not soon to be forgotten.

  5. CUR1350
  6. Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin University Radio is going FM

CUR1350, the student radio station for Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin Universities, was awarded a community FM licence by OFCOM (the independent regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries) on Tuesday 17th March 2009, after broadcasting on AM wavelength to Cambridge since 2001. The station is now gearing up to re-launch as a new community radio station aimed at bringing together all students, staff, academics and alumni from both universities.

With big plans to revolutionise student life in Cambridge, CUR1350 aims to be the number one place for information for all students, from societies and sports teams to advice and up and coming events and live music. The team currently behind CUR1350 have worked closely with OFCOM and various student community groups to secure the coveted community radio licence which will see the new project launch on FM radio in Fresher's 2010. Until then, it will continue to be broadcast on 1350AM and online at www.cur1350.co.uk

This will be a very exciting time for everyone at CUR1350, from presenters and the news team, to management and the advertising team. As the station becomes a 21st Century Media Hub, it's the perfect time to get involved. For more information on how to do so, visit the CUR1350 website.

Station Manager Martin Steers was responsible for overseeing the licence application: "This is representative of all the hard work and dedication from members of the station, presenters, teams and the management committee over the last few years. A big thank you has to go out to all that has been involved past and present."

The latest round of OFCOM licensing could not have fallen at a better time, with CUR1350 celebrating its 30th Birthday. Founded in 1979, the then Cambridge University Broadcasting Society set up a series of restricted licence broadcasts from the basement of a graduate house at the city's Churchill College. Eventually reaching AM radio waves in 2001, the now "CUR1350" has grown to include the communities of Cambridge and Anglia Ruskin Universities, becoming the UK's number 1 student radio station in 2007.

Simon Ruggles, Head of Communication and Community Liaison added "Our team are extremely dedicated and are already working on providing exciting and relevant content for our community, to support the on air effort soon to be heard on FM around the city. It will be a very exciting time for us and hopefully our listeners, old and new!"

If you could erase someone from your mind, would you? Is it presently even possible to do this? When first released, Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman's critically-acclaimed 2004 film, "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind", sparked popular interest in memory reconsolidation and its applications. It also raised questions on how neuropsychiatry could potentially change the way we view ourselves and our minds.

Dr Amy Milton from the Department of Experimental Psychology and Behavioural & Clinical Neuroscience Institute, University of Cambridge will be discussing her research interests in this area. Her brief talk will be followed by the screening of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind". An informal Q&A session will be held after the event, over refreshments.

We look forward to welcoming you!
