  1. Calling All Poets!
  2. 'A man would do well to carry a pencil in his pocket and write down the thoughts of the moment. Those that come unsought are commonly the most valuable and should be secured, they seldom return'- Francis Bacon...

You've agreed to meet your friends in the plodge and have now been waiting ten minutes. You've gazed forlornly at your empty pigeon hole and flicked through backdated copies of Varsity/TCS. Bored and weary, your eyes stray to the notice-board....

Inspired by the success of London's 'Poems on the Underground', Christ's Literary Society (CLit Soc) has come up with a new way to spruce up the plodge. If, like us, you feel the need to infuse a little sparkle and pizzazz into the wintry days ahead, feel free to email us your poetry, or any prose compositions (short stories, scenarios, etc) and we'll stick them up in the plodge. They can be anonymous if you prefer, or you can write under a nom de plume (nothing rude, please).

You don't need to be a Pulitzer Prize winner or even to have already published your works in any of the uni magazines. Email christs.poetry@gmail.com with your stuff, or leave it in our pigeon holes (K. Khorasanee or C. Woodger) and we'll pass on any feedback (to be emailed to the above address). Entries to fit on an A4 page please; so no epics - although extracts from larger pieces could work.

    Happy writing! Xxx

"Would You Prefer a Mobile Phone or a Toilet?"
    26 October 2009 (Mon)
    7.30pm
McCrum Lecture Theatre, Bene't Street, behind The Eagle pub
    FREE ENTRY
    ******************************

Technology has been touted as the panacea for the challenges facing developing countries. However, with limited resources, there is a need to prioritise and economise. Should we focus technological R&D on affordable basic infrastructure, or would it be more expedient to haul communities out of poverty "on the end of an ethernet cable"? This interdisciplinary event will examine case studies of technological aid in the Third World, evaluate the socioeconomic impact of these and discuss future possibilities. Refreshments will be available after the talk and Q&A session.

Panel: Dr David Grimshaw (Head of International Programme - New Technologies, Practical Action), Professor Geoff Walsham (University of Cambridge, Judge Business School), Dr Allam Ahmed (University of Sussex) and Dr Shoba Arun (Manchester Metropolitan University).

  3. Only Connect Contestant Request
  4. Victoria Coren presents the third series of the popular BBC Four quiz show ONLY CONNECT where, as in life itself, knowledge will only take you so far: patience and lateral thinking are also vital. We're looking for teams of three players who share a common passion, ability or profession, to pool their combined wits to solve fiendish conundrums and vexing puzzles.

Only Connect: the quiz where general knowledge meets lateral thinking.

To request an application email contestants@presentable.co.uk including a telephone number.

All entries must be received by no later than midnight on Tuesday 10th November 2009, so get your application in as soon as possible.

  3. Royal Navy Social Event

Excitement? Adventure? Getting paid to have fun? Come along to our Social Event on Tues 27th Oct to find out what fantastic opportunities are available to you through the Cambridge Uni Royal Naval Unit.

We would like you to challenge yourself to something different at University, and get paid to do it! You'd be joining a society that teaches you leadership and teamwork in the maritime environment, and gives you privileged access to the UK’s oldest and proudest service – the Royal Navy. There is no commitment to the Armed Forces – you would receive pay, uniform and unique access to travel and adventurous training opportunities, and a strong social life. We train on Thursday evenings in Cambridge, and put the theory into practice at weekends and in the holidays with our very own ship – HMS RAIDER. You'd learn how to navigate at sea, you'd visit ships and submarines, get practical leadership training, and find out just how vital the sea is to Britain and her economy. There is nothing else like it!

Important information: there's no expectation that you'd join the Royal Navy (though a few chose to), nor is there any call-up liability. The society has access to unique aspects of the Royal Navy therefore only UK, Irish or Commonwealth citizens may apply. Full time undergraduate or post graduate students are welcome to apply but those able to commit for 3 years will receive priority. Joining this society may seriously improve your extra-curricular skills and may result in high levels of excitement, adventure and great social skills.

Interested? Find out more at our event on Tues 27th Oct at 7:30pm at the CURNU building, 2 Chaucer Rd, CB3 2EB. For more info please see our website at www.srcf.ucam.org/curnu.
