Folk, blues, and other rootsy music

Cambridge has an absolutely thriving folk scene: the Folk Festival occurs during our summer vac, but the fact that it's in Cambridge tells you a lot about folk music in Cambridge.

Big name folk acts (Seth Lakeman played, for example, in Lent Term) often play at the normal gig venues for touring bands: see Pop, Rock, and Indie.

Many pubs often do folk nights and that sort of thing - these are very local-orientated though, so it's more around the edges than in the centre. It's generally sort of Olde Worlde Wicker man type stuff - it serves us right for living in the Fens and the London commuter belt, so we provide somewhere for highly-strung city types and retired postmen to drink real ale and pretend to be in touch with nature. The Cambridge Folk Club organises a lot of concerts, as do the Mayflower Folk Club, which meets and organises concerts at the [[Portland Arms]]. A useful website is the Cambridge Folk Directory, which contains links and listings for these two folk clubs, as well as other smaller ones, such as the Morris Dancing Club or the Reel Club.

For students into folk music, the main thing will be the events that occasionally take place at the Cafe Project, especially Songs, a fortnightly Open Mic Night organised by Jacob Wills, featuring folk, blues, gypsy music, country, et al.

DON'T BE FOOLED: the Cambridge Folk Museum has nothing to do with Folk Music, and is more about the peopl of Cambridgeshire over th last 1000 years.
