How CUSU works
Here is a quick summary of how CUSU works:
CUSU has 7 elected sabbatical officers, the President, Education Officer, Welfare and Graduates Officer, Coordinator (Services), Access Officer and Women’s Officer. These positions are filled by elected individuals, and they work full time for a year for CUSU. There are then several other elected individuals which make up the CUSU executive which is a non-policy forming body which works out how best to achieve the policies set by council, which is effectively in charge. Council comprises of representatives from each of the colleges’ students’ unions, the exec committee and faculty representatives. These councils are held fortnightly ensuring 4 are held each term. The President and Vice-President are Christ’s representatives on the council.
Recently at CUSU council a motion was passed meaning that quorate open meetings, i.e. where over 100 CUSU members are present are also policy forming. These open meetings are open to all members of CUSU. Anyone can bring a motion to council or open meeting and anyone can speak at either too.
CUSU also contains, currently, 4 autonomous campaigns: the black students’ campaign, international students, LesBiGayTrans and the women’s union. However students with disabilities is on its way to achieving autonomous status too.
