Food and Drink

Upper Hall

Upper Hall is the main place to eat in college, serving meals every day at the times shown here.

Menus can be found here.

The Buttery

The Buttery is the college bar, a popular social venue in college. Students often meet there after dinner to chat and have drinks or snacks, and its proximity to the library means it is also a convenient place to take breaks from work.  Costa Coffee is served (at a discount on the normal high street price) in the bar from 8.30am - 5.30pm Monday - Friday and 10.30am-5.00pm Saturday & Sunday. You can also purchase sandwiches and snacks from the bar during the day, however, alcohol is only served in the evning when the bar is open Monday to Saturday from 6 – 11pm and on Sunday from 6 – 10:30pm.

Formal Hall

Formal Hall is held six nights a week (Sunday - Friday - Tuesday is Graduate hall) at 7:30 and allows students to have a three-course meal served to them in Formal Hall. People usually arrive around 7:15 so they can choose where they sit in hall. Formal is an extremely popular way to celebrate birthdays or other special events. The dress code is smart and if you are a Christ’s student you have to wear a gown. You are allowed to bring up to two guests to Formal Hall. About once a term a ‘Superhall’ is held, it is usually themed (such as Christmas or Valentines), is announced by the JCR and usually books up quickly. If you want to do something a little more special then it is possible to arrange a menu and seating plan with the catering manager for the same price as a normal formal hall (see the 'Birthdays in Formal Hall' section below)

Booking Formal:

You may book Formal through the College's online booking system. You have to book in by 3pm the day before the formal you want to attend, or by 12 noon on Friday for formal on Sunday. If you wish to book in or out of formal after this time then you must see the Steward who may be able to book you a place, at the discretion of the Catering Manager. In such an instance there will be a £2.50 administration fee (or £6 for special dinners). If you plan on going as a larger group it’s advisable to book slightly further in advance to ensure there’s enough space.  If you need to book in extra guests you will first need the permission of your tutor before approaching the catering department.

Birthdays in Formal Hall:

Sometimes it is possible to have input into menus, arrange seating plans and make other arrangements for birthdays in Formal Hall. If you are interested in doing this then speak to Kevin Keohane (kjk31) in the Catering Office in Z at least 3 weeks in advance of the date. Special arrangements can only be made for Mondays, Wednesdays-Fridays.

Christ's Student £9.00
Guest £10.80 (inc VAT @20%)
Cancellation/Amendments charge on formal hall £ 2.50
Cancellation/Amendments charge on events £ 7.00

OCR Dinners

If you want to book a formal dinner in college, (in the OCR/Mountbatten Room) e.g. for a society event,  then you will need to get in touch with Kevin Keohane (kjk31) as far in advance as possible (he takes bookings up to a year in advance).  You will need to ask a fellow to attend the dinner in order to confirm a booking.  The cost of the dinner will depend on the menu you choose.  The catering brochure with price estimates and food choices can be found here, and the college wine list can be found here.

The food costs are an estimate as college members do not pay the 20% VAT, however, you do have to pay staffing costs (explained in the brochure).  You will be charged for the amount of wine you drink; this can therefore only be calculated after the dinner.

If you have any further questions regarding dinners in college please get in touch with the Catering and Facilities Officer.
