Why Christ's?

During Michaelmas Term 2007, I carried out an investigation into what current undergraduates thought were the best things about college. The responses are below:

1) Location

Christ’s is slap-bang in the middle of Cambridge. The front gate overlooks the main shopping street in the city and it’s only a matter of seconds to the market square and to Sainsbury’s. Even better, the two most popular nightclubs in the city are both within twenty metres of the college – comfortable staggering distance! It’s about a ten-fifteen minute walk to the Sidgwick site, where the majority of Arts students have lectures, and less to the New Museums Site where science lectures are situated. And for those too lazy to walk the ten minutes- there’s a taxi rank right outside the college! Even though the college is in the middle of town, the atmosphere itself is quiet and relaxed; a perfect change from the hustle and bustle of the city. Keep an eye on the video section of the website for some location shots.

2) Size

To those of us who live here, Christ’s is pretty much a perfect size. With approximately 120 Freshers each year, there’s a great opportunity to get to know everybody in your year whilst still forging close friendships. Even better, with only about 400 undergraduates in college, there’s great integration between year groups giving a fantastic sense of community spirit.

3) Academic Reputation

Christ’s has an excellent academic reputation, having performed consistently well in the league tables over the last few years. It’s hard to really identify what the reasons for our success are – certainly I don’t think our students work any harder than those in other colleges. Partly it must be down to the strong tutorial and academic support that we get. Twice-termly meetings with our Director of Studies means that our progress is always monitored, whilst everybody is assigned a tutor who deals with any problems we may encounter leaving us free to get on with life. Another factor is the excellent facilities – the library is open to students 24 hours a day meaning when we can work when we like.
