This match saw the undefeated Christ’s LMB faced off against top of the table Downing. An epic clash was on the cards…
…but never materialised: the game began with a six nil lead being secured in four possessions. This set the tone for the rest of a match that would end with another convincing win for Christ’s.
We seemed to have retained much of the fine form that had been seen at the end of the Sidney match, with incisive offensive passing and a stingy defence. Particular mention should be given here to Gruslys who combined well with Lee to bully the Downing offence into coughing up several turnovers. Congratulations also to newbie Berry who gave a fine performance, artfuly adpating his netballing skills to the superior sport. However, as the first half wore on our initial offensive spark cooled slightly although Nelson still showed some remarkably consistent flair with his hook shots, allowing us to still take a 18-9 lead into half time.
Our slight dip in form continued at the start of the second half although some credit here should go to the increasingly eager Downing defence which attempted some turnovers on Langevin in particular that Ray Lewis would have been proud of. Fortunately some penetrating carries from Lee and Wong inspired the team to increase our work rate once more until eventually the Kelsey Kerridge staff were forced to implement the mercy rule, abruptly pulling up the baskets just as Langevin and Foulkes were combining for another fine two pointer.
